Going from compassion to tenderness and to repentance, Pergolesi's Stabat Mater has the power to arouse a wide range of emotional states, appearing among the most perfect examples of European sacred music.
Composed at the end of Pergolesi's life, Stabat Mater became a reference work for several other composers. It is considered the first example of sacred music in the Galante style, bringing melodic lines to the fore, while maintaining various elements of the rhetoric of the Baroque. With this work, Pergolesi set a new course for Italian vocal music, having repercussions throughout Europe. Rousseau considered his first movement as "the most perfect and touching duet out of a composer's quill". Beautiful vocal solos were performed, in this concert, by two voices recognized in the field of early music.
