Fireworks for the anniversary

Special projects for the birthday of the Musikverein

The subscription concerts of the season 2019/20 already have the cut of a big, radiant anniversary season. Now, Director Dr. Thomas Angyan presentede other projects to mark the 150th anniversary of the house: the "Jubiläumszyklus" and three other special subscriptions, a new book about the Musikverein building, a special coinage of the Münze Austria, a film about the house and an open house presentation. In short: for the birthday of their house the Society of Friends of Music ignites a firework of ideas and initiatives.
On the Epiphany in 1870 the Musikverein opened its doors for the first time to the delight of all music lovers, and exactly 150 years later the Society of Friends of Music celebrates with exactly the programme of that time and some of the world's best performers of today. For the "Jubiläumszyklus" there could be no brighter beginning than this concert. It is conducted by Mariss Jansons, honorary member of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna, such as Riccardo Muti and Daniel Barenboim, who express their attachment to the Musikverein in further concerts of this "Jubiläumszyklus". A separate evening belongs to the phenomenal choir of the house, the Singverein of the Society of Friends of Music, and its choir director Johannes Prinz.
Three more special subscriptions lure Viennese music lovers into the house: two subscriptions with symphonies by Gustav Mahler, played a. a. by the Wiener Philharmonika under Daniel Barenboim, the Berliner Philharmoniker under Kirill Petrenko, the Wiener Symphoniker under Philippe Jordan and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam under Myung-Whun Chung - and a subscription with all Beethoven symphonies, interpreted by the Wiener Philharmonika under Andris Nelsons.
At the end of October 2019, in time for the anniversary, a new book will be published: "Der Musikverein Wien. Ein Haus für die Musik". Author Joachim Reiber and photographer Wolf-Dieter Grabner show the Musikverein as a space of experience and idea building, as a place of encounter and inspiration. They trace the essence of the house and open up - in text and image - surprising perspectives. Eva Angyan has caught the voices of artists who show, in their own way, what this house means as the heart of the music city of Vienna. The book, published by Styria Verlag, is available at the Musikverein shop and bookstore for a price of 30 euros. Members of the Society of Friends of Music who book the "Jubiläumszyklus" receive it for free as a bonus to this special subscription.
Shortly before Christmas, exactly on the 4th of December, the "Münze Österreich" brings out a special coinage, the New Year's Coin 2020 "150 Years Musikverein", designed with motifs from the Golden Hall of the Musikverein. The coin is produced in two qualities: as a silver coin (hand raised) in an edition of 50,000 and as a copper coin (circulation quality) in an edition of 200,000 pieces. This New Year's coin is available in the shop of the Musikverein, in selected Austrian bank and post offices, directly at the "Münze Österreich" (in the shop or online) and even on the New Year's Eve path.
On New Year's Day itself, Vienna's music lovers - and not just them - should turn on their TVs before the New Year's Concert is broadcast. Before the concert from the Musikverein a new film about the building will be shown. Felix Breisach, one of the grandmasters of music film, shot it: a fascinating homage to the Musikverein on its 150th anniversary. Easy to remember is also the date of another highlight in the anniversary year. On February 29, 2020, there will be a big birthday party for everyone: an open house presentation with music and talk, lectures and hands-on activities in (almost) all rooms of the Musikverein. "We want to show," says Thomas Angyan, "how this house has developed and what it stands for today: excellence, diversity and great, inviting openness."

Guided tours

As one of the world's most beautiful concert halls and most decorative and striking buildings on Vienna's Ringstrasse, the Musikverein can be best appreciated in the setting of a concert. However, the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde is also opening the doors of this magnificent building for public tours.
