The program of the 4 New Halls 2018/19

Federspiel and Jan Josef Liefers open the new 2018/19 season in the 4 New Halls. The artists are an ideal combination to reflect the diversity of the programme on offer in the 4 New Halls, which spans the musical spectrum from the classical repertoire to folk music, electronic music by Ulrich Drechsler and the pop of Radio Doria.

Musical boundaries are sounded out and crossed and exciting connections between the most diverse of musical spheres explored. Thus Willi Resetarits, Georg Breinschmid, Die Strottern and Matthias Schorn combine the Blues, folk, tango, jazz, classical music and the Wienerlied tradition with a programme entitled “Schorny spielt auf“. If further proof were needed that music transcends geographical boundaries, it can be found in the concert series Ost.West, in which the Russian Gentleman Club makes its debut in the Musikverein and the group Klezmer Reloaded celebrates its 10th anniversary.

There is a special focus on the memorial years 1918 and 1938, in the form of a dedicated concert series featuring Karl Markovics, Angela Denoke, Peter Matić and Max Müller. Indeed 2018/19 is altogether a season for remembrance and anniversary celebrations. Along with Klezmer Reloaded, the K+K Plattform Vienna too has a 10th anniversary to celebrate in the form of two world premiere performances, led by the first violinist of the Vienna Philharmonic Kirill Kobatschenko. Other concerts mark 10 years since the death of Gert Jonke, 85 years since the birth of Krzysztof Penderecki, 100 years since the birth of Cissy Kraner and 200 years since the births of Clara Schumann and Franz von Suppé.

Our popular words & music programmes, which celebrate the connections between music and words in a variety of ways, include regular Musikverein guests such as writer and musician Michael Köhlmeier and actors Cornelius Obonya and the Stemberger sisters together with debut appearances by cabarettist and presenter Christoph Grissemann, and actors Markus Meyer and Gregor Seberg. Jazz musicians perform alongside the actors Markus Hering and Adele Neuhauser.

Numerous young artists take to the Musikverein stage during this season with their own programmes: Maria Nazarova, Papagena at the 2018 Salzburger Festspiele, the harpist and winner of multiple young musician awards Elisabeth Plank and the clarinettist Vera Karner, winner of the Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe prize. Emmanuel Tjeknavorian performs on two occasions in the 4 New Halls, together with the young pianist Maximilian Kromer and the double bassist Dominik Wagner. Wagner has won numerous major prizes and is also the holder of a current scholarship from the Anne-Sophie Mutter Stiftung.

Since the last season at the Musikverein, we have expanded our successful programme for children to include Albertos Abenteuer (Alberto’s Adventures) for children aged 6 years and above alongside Agathes Wunderkoffer (Agathe’s Magic Suitcase), Topolina and KlingKlang for children from 3 years up, or from 4 to 6 years. This new series has proved so popular that Alberto and his Linzer Torten Orchester are ready to embark on three adventures during the new season! Our adventurer, Albert Landertinger, provides a brief introduction 15 minutes before the start of each concert for children wishing to play an active part in the performances.

We invite anyone having difficulty choosing from this wealth of musical offerings to consider our two selective subscriptions, allowing you to create a 10-concert subscription as individual as your musical taste from across all the concert series on offer at the Musikverein.

We wish you the greatest of pleasure in exploring our programme and look forward to welcoming you at the Musikverein during the new season!
