Legendäre Fernsehauftritte, UN-Friedensbotschafter und 18-facher Grammy-Gewinner: Was gibt es über Yo-Yo Ma, weit über das Violoncello hinaus, nicht alles zu erzählen! Wer ihn als Musiker erleben mag: Am 28. Mai spielt er die sechs Solosuiten von Johann Sebastian Bach im Großen Musikvereinssaal. Ein Konzert, das auch eine universale Botschaft vermittelt. 

Als er vor den Präsidenten Dwight D. Eisenhower und John F. Kennedy auftritt, ist er sieben. Bei seinem Debüt in der New Yorker Carnegie Hall ist er acht. Der Cellist Yo-Yo Ma war eines dieser faszinierenden Wunderkinder. Noch dazu eines, das über exzellente Verbindungen verfügte: „Isaac Stern, mit dem ich später oft auftrat und der ein guter Freund werden sollte, war damals Präsident der Carnegie Hall“, erzählt der 63-Jährige. „Seine Kinder, meine Schwester und ich besuchten dieselbe Schule. Mein Vater gab Isaacs Kindern Violinunterricht. Es war ein Schulkonzert geplant, und man kam überein, dass man doch einfach die Carnegie Hall dafür nutzen könnte.“ Denn auch Wunderkindern schadet es nicht, wenn die Eltern vom Fach sind. Yo-Yo Mas Vater war Geiger, Dirigent und Musikprofessor, die Mutter ausgebildete Sängerin. Beide lebten seit den dreißiger Jahren als chinesische Emigranten in Paris, wo 1955 auch der Sohn geboren wird. Sieben Jahre später zieht die Familie in den Big Apple. Kleine Musikgenies werden in den 1960ern noch vergöttert, nicht hinterfragt. Yehudi Menuhin, Leon Fleisher, Yefim Bronfman – der Klassikbetrieb nimmt den höchstbegabten Nachwuchs freudig in die Arme. Und reicht ihn beflissen durch die Medien. Yo-Yo Ma etwa hat dann mit neun auch einen Auftritt in der berühmten „Tonight Show“.
