Bach und der Goldene Schnitt

Die Romantiker unter Bachs Verehrern wollten ihren Respekt wenigstens in einem Etikett zum Ausdruck bringen und sprachen von der „Hohen Messe“. Die h-Moll-Messe ist Bachs letztes großes Vokalwerk – fraglos ein Werk, das durch nichts in der Musik übertroffen werden kann. Im Musikverein wird das Opus summum nun von Philippe Herreweghe und dem Collegium Vocale Gent aufgeführt. Höhepunkt und glanzvoller Abschluss des Zyklus „Alte Meister“.

Der goldene Schnitt im Goldenen Saal. Die Assoziation kommt auf, wenn man an den kurzen Namen denkt, unter dem Philippe Herreweghe seine Einspielungen publiziert: „phi“ steht nicht nur für Philippe, sondern auch für den Goldenen Schnitt, den die alten Griechen mit diesem Buchstaben bezeichneten. Das Maß also ist wichtig, die Stimmigkeit des Ganzen aus der Balance der Teile, die Architektur als Werk der geistigen Durchdringung. Philippe Herreweghe, studierter Mediziner und Seelenarzt, ist auch als Musiker ein Vertreter des Ganzheitlichen: bei aller Lust am Detail kein Mann der Extreme. Sein Ideal, sagt er, sei die „Transparenz des Interpreten“ – womit in letzter Konsequenz gemeint ist, möglichst gar nicht wahrnehmbar zu sein. So soll, so darf das Werk für sich sprechen. Und welche Musik hätte, aus sich heraus, mehr zu sagen als die von Johann Sebastian Bach?
