Musikverein Festival Vienna 2018

When the city of Vienna celebrates, music is part of it. And of course the Musikverein Vienna. We underline this with a new music festival: the Musikverein Festival. Here we show what distinguishes us in a special way: We celebrate music!

The festival program, to which we invite you to the Musikverein from May 6, 2018, reflects the great international importance of house. Franz Welser-Möst and the Cleveland Orchestra bring their "Prometheus Project" to the Musikverein: a project that is more than just a multi-day orchestral residence and more than just a Beethoven cycle, putting Beethoven's symphonic work into a philosophical context. Similarly, we honor Leonard Bernstein on his 100th birthday. In addition to representative performances of his music - et al with the Wiener Philharmoniker under Zubin Mehta - we organize a symposium that draws inspiration from Bernstein's pioneering achievements as a music facilitator.

Claude Debussy, who, as a much-belated guest, once also stood at the podium of the Grand Musikverein, will be comprehensively honored by us - 100 years after his death. Daniel Barenboim conducts the Staatskapelle Berlin in three concerts with "Musik des Jahresregenten". The Berliner Philharmoniker also arrives from Berlin. Sir Simon Rattle, who took over the chief conductor's staff from Claudio Abbado in the Wiener Musikverein in 2002, says goodbye to Vienna's friends of music as head of the "Berliner".

A music festival in the Musikverein would be untinkable without the Wiener Philharmoniker. Zubin Mehta, Mariss Jansons and Andris Nelsons are the conductors of the Wiener Philharmoniker concerts of our new festival. Chief conductor Philippe Jordan is at the podium of our festival concerts with the Wiener Symphoniker. Cornelius Meister with Bernstein's "Chichester Psalm" sets a fulminating final accent of his successful work as chief conductor of the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna.

This is how Vienna celebrates music. Welcome to the first Musikverein Festival.
