Hexenmeister im Reich der Obsessionen

Mit seiner Meisterschaft in der kleinen Form habe Hugo Wolf die zu seiner Zeit einzig mögliche Antwort auf die Gigantomanie Richard Wagners gefunden, sagt der britische Tenor Ian Bostridge und widmet dem Liedoeuvre des unterschätzten Komponisten einen Abend im Brahms-Saal.

Unter den bedeutenden Liedinterpreten unserer Zeit ist Ian Bostridge nicht der Einzige, der sich dieses Metier quasi im zweiten Bildungsweg erobert hat. Sein Baritonkollege Christian Gerhaher hat zum Beispiel ein Medizinstudium absolviert, Florian Boesch hat eine Laufbahn als Produktdesigner ernsthaft in Betracht gezogen. Bostridge hingegen ist in den Geisteswissenschaften ausgewiesen, hat am Corpus Christi College in Oxford als Historiker promoviert, hat auf seinem Fachgebiet gelehrt und geforscht, ehe er sich entschied, die akademische Laufbahn zugunsten seiner Leidenschaft fürs Singen aufzugeben. Letztere hatte ihn freilich von Jugend auf begleitet. Mit zwölf hatte er bei einem Schulkonzert Schuberts „Hirt auf dem Felsen“ vorgetragen, wenig später bei einem Wettbewerb sowohl als Knabensopran wie auch mit seiner gerade erst zum Vorschein kommenden Tenorstimme Punkte geholt.
